Equal Exchange’s co-founders came together to form the company in the late 1980s, setting out to prove a point: that you could be a successful, even a profitable company and not treat your workers, suppliers, and other stakeholders like cogs in the money-making machine. You could pay everyone fairly, even give workers ownership and control of the company, and have cash left over to repay investors.
